I offer personalised counselling tailored to your unique needs. My approach helps you explore your thoughts and feelings in a safe, compassionate and completely confidential environment. Whether you are facing overwhelming emotions, relationship challenges, trauma, bereavement, grief or loss of any kind, or issues stemming from childhood, I am here as your counsellor to support you every step of the way.

Hello, I am Ruth Thompson and am passionate about supporting people through the difficulties that life can bring about.
Having supported people in my work in domestic abuse charities and children's services, in 2019 I founded a charity to support young people in deep emotional pain and especially those who struggle with thoughts of suicide.
With a wealth of experience behind me and a passion to help people more, I trained as an integrative Counsellor at Waverley Abbey College. I hold a Dip(HE) in Counselling and am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), adhering to their ethical framework to ensure confidentiality, care with professionalism in every counselling session.
As an integrative counsellor, I bring strengths from different therapeutic approaches, tailoring our sessions to suit your unique needs. Whatever you bring to the counselling room, we will work together to help find greater clarity, healing and hope.
In a safe, confidential, and supportive environment, you can explore your thoughts, feelings, experiences, and behavioural patterns and, together, we can work toward understanding the causes of your distress, helping you process past experiences, navigate present challenges, and move forward with greater clarity, peace of mind and enhanced well-being.
A compassionate space where your loss and grief can be fully expressed. Any loss can have a profound effect on our life. Facing the challenges of loss is a journey where I can offer empathy, support and time for you to grieve in a safe environment and to begin to manage life after your loss. I also work with loss through suicide and bring both my training and my lived experience of this to our work together.
A confidential, supportive space for both of you to explore relationship challenges, communication issues, and complex emotions. In our couples counselling sessions, we work together to gain clarity, build understanding and support positive change. I can offer insight as you explore issues and differences, or address unhelpful behavioural patterns in order to move forward.
All sessions last 50 minutes, providing a confidential and calm environment. Counselling sessions are available either in person in my counselling room in PO4 or online, offering flexibility to suit individual circumstances and preferences. Mentoring sessions are also offered at £50 per session - these are more informal in style and can take place as a walk, in a coffee shop or in another suitable setting in Portsmouth, offering a more relaxed environment for conversation and reflection.

"I cannot thank Ruth enough for the invaluable support she has given me during my bereavement. She made me feel safe and listened to without judgement, which allowed me to open up about my grief and understand my thoughts and feelings better. I highly recommend her as a compassionate counsellor." KT 12/2/2026
"Thank you for the support you provided me during a challenging year. Last year, I felt lost and devoid of joy, and talking to you through face-to-face counselling helped me find comfort and direction. Your support was essential, and I am now in a much better place thanks to your guidance." TC 14/12/2025
"Having someone to talk to when I was grieving was invaluable. Ruth's gentle approach in our face-to-face sessions allowed me to navigate my grief on my own terms. Although discussing it was tough, having that dedicated time each week helped me face and sort through my mixed-up feelings." SC 18/9/2025
